About Max

Max Botner, Ph.D. is an associate professor of Biblical Studies at William Jessup University (Rocklin, CA) and director of the Center for Bible Study. His first book, Jesus Christ as the Son of David in the Gospel of Mark (Cambridge University Press), was awarded the 2021 Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise. He has served in a variety of church and parachurch ministries and is passionate about using his training as a biblical scholar to serve and equip pastors and local congregations to articulate and embody the gospel of King Jesus. He and his wife Jessica are thrilled to be back home in Northern California. They are the proud parents of four incredible little human beings.

Dr. Botner gracefully and boldly articulated the importance of a Social Gospel and Social Holiness (as John Wesley called it) that sees, speaks to, and serves everyone, especially those who are marginalized and the disinherited among us, just as Jesus did.

-Dwight L. Gutridge, MABS, Presiding Elder of the New Rising Western Michigan District, Pastor of Saint Luke A.M.E. Zion Church (The House of Healing)

“Dr. Botner was a tremendous help to our church as we worked to share the love of Christ across multiple generations. He is a gifted speaker and teacher.”

- Rev. Dr. Tony Stiff, Ph.D., D.Min., North Central California Presbytery

“Max Botner is one of the bright lights of the new generation of biblical scholars. He is well equipped to bring encouragement and challenge through fresh biblical ideas, carefully researched and clearly expressed.”

— Rt. Rev. N.T. Wright, former Bishop of Durham; Emeritus Professor of New Testament & Early Christianity, University of St. Andrews; Senior Research Fellow, Wycliffe Hall, University of Oxford
